The
mining division has its iron ore operations in
the mineral rich belt of Barbil - Barajamda belt
of Orissa. The mines have substantial resource
base of superior quality with high Fe content
and bulk density. The Fe content varies between
63-66 per cent, which is one of the best quality
materials available in the country.
Essel holds a leading position in the Indian mining
industry for its superior mining techniques, equipment
and scale / flexibility operations and systems.
The potential of the proven deposit, quality and
quantity of reserves are good enough to sustain
the operation for the next 25 years at the current
operating capacity.
The
main products are:
- Calibrated
iron ore lump inputs for steel making
through DRI / BF process.
- Iron
ore fines inputs for sinters and pellets,
used for
making steel.
Essel
Mines is among the largest players in the non-captive
private segment in India, with an annual mining
capacity of over 15 million tonnes. Mining operations
are mechanised, adopting the state-of-the-art
technology and equipment, namely, hydraulic drifter,
in-pit crusher, cone crushers and
mobile crushers. Flexibility in operations enables
the division to maximise the utilisation of resources
as well as to cater to the needs of diverse customer
segments. It has commissioned private railway
siding to boost its logistic infrastructure and
is in the process of commissioning one more siding.
Essel is also exploring various initiatives for
developing logistics infrastructure to support
its export business.
Essels
roadmap includes exploring further mine acquisitions
and leveraging upon both greenfield and brownfield
opportunities. To further capitalise on the experience
and expertise garnered in the mining sector, the
company plans to
venture into coal mining.

The
ferro-chem division
Established in 1980, the ferro-chem division of
Essel is located at Vapi in Gujarat, a major industrial
hub. It is the largest producer of high quality
noble ferro alloys in India. Its products include
ferro-molybdenum, ferro-vanadium and ferro-titanium.
It commands over 50 per cent of the market share
in India. The division also produces ferro-alloy
powders, unfused V2O5 and moly-oxide briquette.
The division has developed ferro titanium (35
40 per cent grade) through internal R&D initiative.
Noble ferro alloys are used in the manufacture of
alloy steels, high-speed steels and other special
grade steels, infusing the anti-abrasive and anti-corrosive
properties to steel. Additionally, these products
find application in the manufacture of castings,
electrodes and act as a catalyst in the fertiliser
industry.
A constant endeavour of Essel's ferro-chem division
is to develop high value products for its customers
with a sharp focus on R&D, strong distribution
network, and customer service backed by a dedicated
team. Focus on R&D has earned the ferro-chem
division a global position, with global benchmarks
attained in various operational parameters.

Wind
power division
Essel Mining made a foray into the wind power sector
by installing windmills at Dhule in Maharashtra
of 15 mw which expanded to 75 mw in FY06. This strategic
initiative will reinforce Essels image as
an environmentally conscious corporate citizen.
Entire power generated from these windmills is supplied
to the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB).
Wind power is cost competitive with conventional
sources of electricity, such as oil or gas and unlike
traditional polluting sources of energy, wind has
no fuel cost. It therefore serves as natural hedge
against volatile fuel prices, while helping to protect
the environment.
