Domsjö Fabriker (Domsjö) is a leading Swedish speciality pulp and bio-refinery company. Domsjö was acquired by the Aditya Birla Group in April 2011, and is now a member of the Pulp and Fibre Business of the Group.

A pioneer in the Swedish chemical industry, Domsjö is at the forefront of developing a number of alternative ways to refine wood into products with strong environmental benefits. Simply put: Domsjö makes more from the tree!Domsjö has a production capacity of 230,000 tonnes of dissolving cellulose, 120,000 tonnes of lignin and 14,000 tonnes of bioethanol. The unique process also generates complementary products such as carbonic acid, biogas and energy. The bioenergy generated by the process is used internally and makes Domsjö virtually independent of fossil energy sources. The raw material consists largely of spruce and pine.

Domsjö’s products are mostly sold outside Sweden, and the largest markets are in Asia. Its turnover is over 2 billion SEK (Swedish Krona). Domsjö employs 370 people and in addition there are wood sourcing subsidiaries in Latvia and Lithuania.

Environmental concerns have been its focus for many years. Deliberate, environmentally sound measures were implemented in both its processes and waste treatment facilities, which has led to a gradual decrease of environmental impact. Domsjö was one of the first in the world to bleach cellulose to the highest degree of brightness in a process totally free from the use of chlorine or chlorine dioxide.

Domsjö is the only cellulose plant worldwide to have a closed loop bleaching process with zero emissions. Bleaching residue is burnt and turned into energy used in the process. In the biotreatment plant, bacteria break down the remaining organic matter and biogas is produced. This biogas is used as an energy source for the drying of lignin, and generation of electricity and steam.

Domsjö’s centre for innovation and development —DomInnova — serves as the driver of innovation, with the task of encouraging, capturing and processing ideas for new products. Development, innovation and, to some extent, research are undertaken in close collaboration with the rest of the organisation and a broad external contact network with companies, universities, etc. MoRe Research is an important partner, with labs, pilot equipment, analytical instruments and knowledge relevant to biorefinery development.
